Private Swim Lessons for Children

North Seattle Swim School is the perfect place for ​children to learn to swim. We exclusively offer private swim lessons, so your child can learn at the pace that's right for them. We understand that no two children are exactly the same, and we're able to customize our lessons to meet your specific goals and needs. Our pool is heated to about 90 degrees. All lessons are private with one instructor and one student, and we have a maximum of two lessons running at the same time in the pool (at opposite ends of the pool). Morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend lessons available.

Parents often (but not always) want swim lessons for their child one of a few reasons:

  1. They may be scared of the water and you want them to experience pools with joy and confidence.

  2. They may have little to no experience in pools and you want them to be safe and become independent swimmers

  3. They may have some swim experience and would like to take their swimming to the next level, perhaps with the goal of eventually making a swim team. 

Our experienced private swim instructors can help you with all of these goals. We will go at the pace that's appropriate for your child, and they never have to feel pressured to keep up with others or feel held back because they're more advanced than the rest of the class. Your child has our swim instructor's undivided attention, so your kiddo isn't wasting time waiting for their turn or practicing potentially bad habits with nobody paying attention.

Child Swim Lesson Course Curriculum​

We base our curriculum off of the American Red Cross's swimming levels, but are able to customize lessons for each student to meet their needs. Based on your child's experience and goals, we can spend extra time on any level or jump directly to a more advanced level.

  • Level 1: Water Comfort & Safety: Students will learn how to feel comfortable in the water and safely enjoy it.

    • Get comfortable with your face and head in the water

    • Learn to blow bubbles​ and breathe

    • Learn to float on your back

    • Basic swim movements in the water (arm scoops, elementary backstroke)

    • Safely jumping in, surfacing, and exiting the pool

  • Level 2: Fundamentals of Aquatic Skills: Students will learn basic swimming skills with an emphasis on kicking.

    • Kicking with straight legs on your stomach​

    • Kicking on your back

    • Swimming across the pool with rolling on your back to breathe. 

  • Level 3: Stroke Development: Students will start learning the fundamentals of freestyle (front crawl).

    • Learn to swim with straight arms and pulling water​

    • Swimming across the pool with rolling using a 4 scoops / 1 breath pattern

    • Kicking down to the bottom of the pool and resurfacing

    • Swimming with no physical support from the instructor

 

Clothes Test - Student will jump into the pool fully dressed, swim across, and safely exit the pool.

  • Level 4: Stroke Improvement: Students will improve their freestyle stroke and start learning backstroke

    • Swim 4 laps of freestyle with solid technique

    • Swim 2 laps of backstroke with solid technique

  • Level 5: Stroke Refinement and Breaststroke

    • Learn and swim 2 laps using breaststroke​

    • Refine crawl stroke and swim 6 laps

    • Refine backstroke and swim 4 laps

  • Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency: Students will learn to swim with ease and efficiency, and gain the ability to swim smoothly over greater distances. 

    • Learn butterfly and swim 2 laps​

    • Refine and continue expanding freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke

  • Level 7 - Pre-team: Students will learn skills necessary for racing or triathlons​

    • Learn flip turns​

    • Intro to diving starts

    • Open water swimming (on case-by-case basis)
